Eva Hesse works with translucent fabrics which is what I enjoy doing most in my work. The way her work is presented is beautifully thought-out and makes the most of the pieces. This particular piece ‘Contingent’ is striking, the mixture of gold and translucent works magnificently and the way they appear to float, with some lightly brushing the floor evokes an emotional response. When I was doing my A-Level in Art I used PVA glue on very thin fabrics mostly either organza or scrim and it came out similarly to these once I they were dry and pulled from the plastic sheet. These pieces give off a personal calm feeling. It takes me back to a lecture we had by Clare Curneen about Flesh in Ceramics, as these remind me or layers of skin.
